Built into Side Kick

Side Kick / Built in

Utilities

The small fixes every site needs, built into Side Kick itself.

No extra plugins to install: everything here comes with Side Kick. Only Duplicate is on from the start; everything else waits until you switch it on.

Content

Copy pages safely, and switch off what you don't use.

Duplicate any page or post

A Duplicate link sits next to Quick Edit in your lists of pages and posts. One click makes a draft copy, ready to edit.

On by default
  • The copy is a draft called "… (copy)", with the original's content, excerpt, categories, tags, custom fields and settings.
  • Afterwards Side Kick checks the copy against the original and tells you if anything didn't come across.
  • You can only copy what you're allowed to edit.
  • ElementorThe layout is copied and its styles rebuilt for the copy. Theme Builder display conditions are left off on purpose, with a warning.
  • WooCommerceThe product is copied, but its variations aren't. A warning tells you how many to add back before the copy can be bought.
  • Advanced Custom FieldsField values on your pages come across. For ACF's own field groups, use ACF's duplicate.
  • Rank MathThe page's SEO data comes across with the rest of its data.

Elementor, WooCommerce, Advanced Custom Fields and Rank Math are trademarks of their owners. Darwin Labs is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

Turn off comments, everywhere

One switch removes comments from every kind of content, and from every corner of the admin.

Off until you switch it on
  • Removes the comment menus, the Discussion settings, the admin-bar bubble and the dashboard and Recent Comments widgets.
  • Closes the doors spammers use: comment feeds, the comments part of the REST API and the XML-RPC comment methods.

Turn off the block editor

Prefer the classic editor? Switch Gutenberg off and you're back to the classic editor and classic widgets.

Off until you switch it on
  • Block styles and scripts stop loading too, including WooCommerce's block styles.

Security

Better passwords and fewer open doors.

Sensible protection that every site should have. All of it is off until you switch it on.

Force strong passwords

Set a proper minimum for passwords, for everyone or just the roles you choose.

  • At least 12 characters, with upper and lower case letters, a number and a symbol.
  • Can't contain the username, or the first part of the email address.
  • The rules are shown on the password reset and registration forms, and every problem is listed at once.

Block leaked passwords

Passwords that have turned up in data breaches are refused, checked against the Have I Been Pwned database.

  • Your password never leaves your site. Only the first five characters of a scrambled (hashed) version are sent, and the match is made on your server.
  • If the check can't be reached within three seconds, the password is allowed rather than locking anyone out.

Stop passwords being reused

A new password has to be new.

  • Remembers each person's last 5 passwords by default; choose anywhere from 1 to 50.
  • Only scrambled (hashed) versions are kept, and they're removed when the user is deleted.

Turn off XML-RPC

XML-RPC is an old way in to WordPress that attackers still try. Most sites don't need it.

  • Blocks xmlrpc.php, stops pingbacks, and removes the tell-tale links and headers.

Keep the error log private

WordPress's debug log can reveal details about your site. This keeps it out of public reach.

  • Adds a rule that blocks the log, and removes it again when switched off.
  • Works on Apache and LiteSpeed servers. On nginx, ask your host to add a server rule.

Your admin

One home for your extra tools.

One dashboard for every module

Every Side Kick module you install appears as a card, so they're all in one place.

  • Search, or filter by Active, Inactive and Needs update.
  • Flip several switches, then apply them together, or discard.
  • Check for updates, update one, or update all.

Dark mode, just for you

Switch Side Kick's screens to dark. It only changes your own account.

  • Previews straight away when you switch it on.

A tidier Plugins screen

Hide Side Kick's modules from the Plugins list.

  • They stay active, and you still update them from the Side Kick dashboard.

Good to know

The details.

  • Needs WordPress 6.0 or newer and PHP 8.1 or newer.
  • Nothing is sent anywhere, except the leaked-password check when you switch it on. No tracking.
  • Deactivating Side Kick keeps your settings, and removes the error-log rule.
  • Side Kick's screens are for administrators only.
